Each of
these regions are separate and distinct from one another.
Of
the three regions - Nagambie
Lakes is nearest to Melbourne. Travel time
is about 1.75 hours from the city centre. Milawa is a further one hour away and Rutherglen
is approximately one hour further away again.
Each region has a significant position
in the history and heritage of Victoria's wine industry.
Nagambie Lakes is home
to Tahbilk. Tahbilk is truly a living museum to wine. It is home to the
longest continuously producing blocks of Shiraz and Marsanne vines in the
world. The original Tahbilk winery was once cited by Robert Parker in Wine
Spectator as one of the 20 great historic wineries of the world.
Milawa is home to Brown
Bros and has perhaps the strongest and longest links to the growing of
Italian varieties in Australia. the area around the town of Milawa has
established a great reputation for it's locally produced foods. The most
notable of these businesses is Milawa Mustards and Milawa Cheese.
Rutherglen is generally
regarded as the home of fortified wine in Australia.
Single day tours from Melbourne to any one of these regions
are "doable". However, a single day tour combining
a visit to each
of the three regions is not really practical.
Tours can be conducted on a private basis
or you can join a shared program with a small number of other people.
