The
Mornington Peninsula has
long been known as Melbourne's "summer holiday
playground". Many Melbourne families have happy memories of
summers in the
region.
From the early 1970's the Mornington Peninsula has quietly and steadily
become a new force in Australian wine. The vineyards and wineries are generally
small and offer a distinctly boutique feel.
Their localities vary greatly across the Peninsula. Some are located near
to the warmer and shallower waters of Port Phillip, others are close to the deep,
cooler waters of Westernport Bay and others too on the lofty volcanic
soils of the Main Ridge and Red Hill areas. As a result the varied micro-climates contribute to a
diversity of wines from the one region.
Close to
several popular beaches,
the region contains a variety of things to do. The region can also be a stopping point on
the way to the Penguin Parade at Phillip Island or alternately as part of
an extended tour taking in the Great Ocean Road. Keeping to the wine
theme, onward
travel can take you across the bay as part of a day's touring around Port
Phillip Bay.
Tours can be conducted on a private basis
or you can join a shared program with a small number of other people.
