Geelong
is Victoria's second city and was once at the centre of Australia's largest single wine region. Like other wine
regions in Victoria, the Swiss had a significant influence on the region in
its earliest days. All that began to fade in the late nineteenth century.
However, today Geelong has again become an established part of Victoria's
wine map. Geelong's resurgence begins in the 1960's when Idyll Vineyard -
now a part of Jindalee Estate - was established. A variety of soils and
sub-regions provide ample opportunity to discover a wine to please.
These days the Bellarine
Peninsula has assumed a prominent place in the Geelong region. Arguably the
most notable property in this area is Scotchman's Hill. Nearby wineries
include Curlewis, Bellarine Estate and Kilgour Estate. A short distance away
lies the historic seaside town of Queenscliff. With its beautiful heritage
buildings and outstanding reputation for food, Queenscliff has become a
popular destination in its own right.
South East of Geelong is
the fabulous new Pettavel and beyond this we find a burgeoning new region
around Colac. Here you might like to mix beer and wine at Otway Estate where
the owners make wine and brew beer as well. |
